Bossier Parish, LA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Under Section 19-3, the Bossier Parish Police Jury adopts, pursuant to La. S. , the construction codes that govern building work in unincorporated Bossier Parish, and Section 19-3(g) specifically adopts the National Electrical Code (NEC), 2021 or most current edition, as published by the National Fire Protection Association, as the electrical standard. Section 19-5(a) then makes it unlawful to erect, install, enlarge, alter, extensively alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical system regulated by the adopted code without first obtaining a properly issued permit from the Bossier Parish Building Official.

A narrow set of minor electrical jobs is exempt from that permit requirement under Section 19-5(d): the replacement of lamps and the connection of approved portable electrical equipment to approved permanently installed receptacles do not need a permit. Applications must identify the work, describe the property, state the construction valuation, and, per Section 19-5(l), specifically note when the scope includes electrical work; the building official reviews the application and issues the permit once it is found to conform to the code. An issued electrical permit becomes invalid if the authorized work is not started within 180 days, or if it is suspended or abandoned for 180 days after starting, though the building official can grant extensions of up to 180 days at a time for justified cause under Section 19-5(p).

Every electrical permit or a copy must stay posted and visible at the front exterior of the job site until the project is complete, and Section 19-11 additionally bars a utility connection to any electrical system regulated by the code until the building official approves it.
