1's general maintenance duty: elevators, dumbwaiters and escalators must stay in good working order, be capable of safely sustaining every imposed load, and remain free from physical and fire hazards. The same section requires the building to keep the most current certificate of inspection either posted inside the elevator itself, attached to the escalator or dumbwaiter, or on file and available for public inspection in the building office, so a tenant or inspector can verify the equipment was recently checked. 2 then adds an operational-continuity rule specific to passenger elevators: in a building equipped with passenger elevators, at least one must be kept running at all times the building is occupied.
