Wylie, TX Building Safety: Elevator Maintenance (2026)

Wylie's Building Inspections Division enforces elevator fire protection through Sec. 22-42, Amendments to the International Building Code, adopted by Ordinance No. 2017-32 on December 12, 2017 and revised by Ordinance No. 2022-12 on February 8, 2022. The amendment adds Section 3005.5.1 to the 2021 IBC, prohibiting automatic sprinklers inside elevator machine rooms, machinery spaces, control rooms, control spaces and hoistways, while requiring the building's fire alarm system to monitor the sprinkler control valve and water-flow devices on every floor. A separate water-protection clause requires an approved method to keep sprinkler water from outside the elevator lobby from infiltrating the hoistway enclosure, and the amendment eliminates the shunt-trip elevator shutdown requirement for firefighter and passenger safety.

New Section 3005.8 bars any storage in the elevator machine room, control room or machinery spaces and requires posted signage reading 'No Storage Allowed' at each entry. Work touching these systems needs a building permit under Sec. 22-4, and the Construction Code Board created under Sec. 22-21 hears appeals from the building official's decisions on these amendments. Because fire and life-safety code violations fall under the city's general penalty section, Sec. 1-13, a violation involving these elevator fire-protection or storage rules can draw a fine of up to $2,000.00 per day, with each day of noncompliance charged as a separate offense.
