08 amends California Residential Code Section R309 to make automatic fire sprinklers mandatory rather than optional for the housing types most common in Redondo Beach's neighborhoods. 1 requires an automatic residential fire sprinkler system in townhouses, with an exception that pulls existing, unsprinklered townhouses into the mandate too: if an addition of more than 1,200 square feet or an additional story is added to an existing townhouse that lacks sprinklers, a sprinkler system must be installed as part of that project. 108: an automatic sprinkler system must be provided throughout an existing R-3 occupancy whenever a 1,200-square-foot or greater addition occurs, as determined by the Building Code Official.
