Gilroy, CA Building Safety: Building Inspections (2026)

City Code § 6.7(b)(6) adds Section 109.5, Inspection Record Card, to Gilroy's amendments to the California Residential Code: work requiring a permit "shall not be commenced" until the permit holder or an agent has posted or otherwise made available the inspection record card issued by the building official, positioned so the building official can conveniently make the required entries regarding inspection of the work. The card must be maintained and available by the permit holder until the building official grants final approval. The identical requirement applies to Building Code permits under § 6.7(a)(6)'s Section 110.7.

Together with Section 105.7, which requires the permit itself and approved plans to stay on the jobsite, and Section 109.4, which doubles the fee for work started without a permit, the inspection card system is how Gilroy's Community Development building division tracks a project through its required inspection stages from foundation to final approval. Because the card must remain available throughout construction, an inspector arriving on site who cannot locate it is entitled to treat the project as out of compliance with Section 109.5/110.7 until the card is produced or replaced by the building official.
