Sec. 152.40 requires the building director to make, or cause to be made, inspections of work being done under a permit as necessary to ensure full compliance with the code and the permit's terms; it is written broadly enough to cover any stage of construction the director deems necessary rather than a single final walkthrough. Sec. 152.35(F) breaks that inspection duty into named specialties once a tenant moves into commercial space or a new commercial building is occupied: building inspections check building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work against minimum code requirements; the fire marshal checks exit signs and fire-code safety requirements; and code enforcement checks handicap signage, parking, and dumpster screening, with a certificate of occupancy issued only once all required inspections are approved.

The applicant, not the city, carries the burden of scheduling: Sec. 152.35 states it is the applicant's responsibility to re-schedule inspections, and if the building commissioner's office is not notified for a required inspection, the contractor is assessed a $50.00 fee. Demolition work gets its own inspection checkpoint under Sec. 152.46(C): the building director's office inspects the excavated site before any fill is installed, one inspection of the excavated site and one final inspection are free, and each additional inspection required because of uncompleted work costs $125.00.

A permit obtained under Sec. 152.30 is issued only after prior payment of inspection fees under Sec. 152.35, and Sec. 152.34 requires the resulting placard to remain visibly posted from the street throughout the work being inspected, with a minimum $50.00 fine for failing to display it. Violations of the inspection requirements fall under the Sec. 152.999 general building penalty, fined $1.00 to $1,000.00 per day of continued noncompliance.
