Tamarac, FL Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

City Code Sec. 14-32, carried forward from Code 1975 Sec. 15-8, prohibits dismantling or repairing motor vehicles in any residentially zoned area of the City of Tamarac. Subsection (a) exempts only 'minor repairs' performed without payment or consideration: replacing bulbs, fuses or windshield wipers, adjusting or replacing a battery, or jump-starting a battery with a charging machine or booster cables. Subsection (b) separately allows booster-cable service and towing a vehicle out of a residential area without violating the section. Subsection (d) provides the main escape valve for residents: any repair, no matter how extensive, is allowed if it takes place entirely within a fully enclosed residential garage, so a homeowner working on a car with the garage door down is not in violation even though a driveway repair job would be.

Subsection (c) adds a related, independent restriction: vehicles with invalid or expired registration, or in a partially dismantled condition, may not be parked or stored on the public right-of-way or on private property in a residentially zoned area at all, regardless of whether any repair work is happening. Enforcement falls to the city's code enforcement officers, and subsections (e) and (f) each set the penalty at $100, applied separately for every vehicle and every day the violation continues, whether the charge is for illegal repair or dismantling under subsection (e) or for illegally storing an unregistered or partially dismantled vehicle under subsection (f).
