Hoboken, NJ Business Licensing & Operations: Secondhand Dealers (2026)

Section 128-1 makes it unlawful to engage in, carry on, pursue, or conduct any business, trade, or employment listed in Sections 128-3, 128-5, or 128-6 within Hoboken without a license, and it also bars using any place, premises, or vehicle for a licensed purpose unless the owner or driver holds that license. Secondhand dealing falls under the Section 128-6 fee schedule administered by the Municipal Clerk, which separately lists Secondhand Auto Dealer at $500 and Secondhand Dealer, General Merchandise at $100, alongside related trades such as Junkyard and Auto Wrecking Yard, both at $1,000, and Auctioneer at $225.

Unless otherwise provided, every license issued under Chapter 128 expires December 31 of the year it is granted, applies only to the person named on it, and cannot be transferred without the consent of the City Council under Section 128-2. Applications for the licenses enumerated in Section 128-6 are filed with the Municipal Clerk under Section 128-1B. License fees are countersigned by the Comptroller and the Municipal Clerk and reported monthly to the City Council under Section 128-7. Anyone who lets their license lapse past January 31 owes an additional $25 late renewal charge on top of the regular renewal fee under Section 128-8C.
