Wylie, TX Business Licensing & Operations: Tattoo & Body Modification (2026)

Wylie's Zoning Ordinance folds tattooing, body piercing, branding, scarification, and non-medical implants into a single Body Art Studio use under Appendix B Section 5.2.F.5. The definition excludes practices regulated as medical procedures, ear piercing with pre-sterilized single-use stud systems, temporary adhesive body decoration, and washable applications such as henna. The Land Use Chart lists Body Art Studio as permitted with additional requirements in only two commercial zoning districts, at a parking ratio of one space per 150 square feet. The ordinance's central additional provision is a locational buffer: a Body Art Studio must be set back 1,000 feet from any other Body Art Studio, any Residential Zoning District, any church, any public, private, or parochial school, and any day care.

Because Wylie's commercial corridor along State Highway 78 and its neighborhoods sit close together, this 1,000-foot rule narrows where a shop can locate even within a district that otherwise allows the use. On the licensing side, the studio's Certificate of Occupancy must be held by a person licensed by the State of Texas under Chapter 146 of the Texas Health and Safety Code, and the facility must meet all environmental health requirements of both the City of Wylie and the State of Texas. Building Inspections verifies the state license and environmental health sign-off before issuing occupancy, and Code Enforcement follows up on complaints about an unlicensed or out-of-setback operation.
