Ogden, UT Environmental Rules: Vehicle Idling Restrictions (2026)

Ogden City Code Section 12-14-6(B), part of the Chapter 14 noise ordinance's restricted uses, targets heavy-truck idling near homes. No person may operate the engine of a standing motor vehicle rated over ten thousand (10,000) pounds manufacturer's gross vehicle weight for more than ten (10) minutes when the vehicle is parked on a residential premises, on a premises next to a residential premises, or on a public street next to a residential premises. The rule carves out two exceptions: vehicles confined and operated within an enclosed structure, and vehicles being used directly in construction activity or the operation of construction equipment, which are governed instead by Section 12-14-6(E)'s construction hours.

Because the idling limit sits inside the noise chapter, enforcement follows the same path as the rest of Chapter 14: a violation is a class B misdemeanor under Section 12-14-10, subject to the penalties in Title 1, Chapter 4 of the city code, and the idling vehicle can also be treated as a public nuisance subject to abatement. Ogden police, or another city officer or employee the mayor authorizes by administrative order, can enforce the section; because it turns on the vehicle's parked location and duration rather than a decibel reading, no sound level meter is needed to document a violation, only the time the engine has run while parked next to or on a residential premises.
