Boca Raton, FL Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Sec. 28-1356(a)(1) sets a base height schedule for fences, walls, gates, and hedges located within any required yard: residential and miscellaneous districts are limited to 6 feet, business districts to 6 feet, and commercial and industrial districts to 7 feet. But subsection (a)(2) overrides that base number for the front yard specifically: in residential districts, and on residential plots in a VC district, front-yard fences, walls, and gates are capped at 4 feet. Two carve-outs raise that front-yard cap to 6 feet: on a corner plot, a fence up to 6 feet is allowed within the required yard from the side street plot line (not the true front yard, which stays at 4 feet), provided it sits at least 5 feet from the side street plot line and a shrub buffer with maximum 3-foot spacing screens it; and on a double-frontage plot, a fence up to 6 feet is allowed along the rear-facing front plot line under the same 5-foot setback and landscape-buffer conditions.

Height is measured, per subsection (a)(6), from the ground level at the lowest grade within 3 feet of either side of the fence. Hedges get separate treatment under (a)(3): they may exceed the numeric caps in a required rear or side yard that abuts non-residential or publicly owned property, or that is 25 feet or wider, or with neighbor agreement if narrower. Fences and walls built on or before February 1, 1978 are grandfathered under subsection (b)(1) unless they become a hazardous obstruction. This structure was enacted by Ord.
