Mesa, AZ Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 11-30-4(A)(1) of Mesa's General Site Development Standards sets fence and freestanding-wall height limits for the AG, RS, RSL, RM and DR districts. 5 feet is visually transparent rather than solid. Side and rear yard fences and walls in these districts max out at 6 feet. 5 feet, but rear yards and interior side yards allow up to 8 feet, two feet taller than the residential standard. In both district groups, once a fence or wall sits in the buildable area of the lot rather than a required yard, it can rise to the maximum building height allowed for that district.

Corner lots carry an added restriction: Section 11-30-4(D) requires a 10-foot by 10-foot visibility triangle where a corner lot's rear line abuts a side line of an adjoining key lot, and Section 11-30-4(C) cross-references the citywide intersection-visibility standard at Section 11-30-14 for all fences near intersections. Continuous fence or wall runs along a right-of-way or private street are also capped at 150 feet of unbroken plane under Section 11-30-4(E), after which articulation, columns, posts, height variation, or protrusions/recesses of at least 18 inches, is required.
