Gulfport, FL Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Sec. 7-3(e) excludes barbed wire for fence purposes from every zoning district in the city except where permitted in the C-1 or C-2 business districts, meaning single-family, multifamily and other residential zones cannot use it at all. Sec. 7-3(f) is broader still: it bans electrified fences in any district, business or residential, with no carve-out anywhere in the article. Where barbed wire is allowed under the C-1/C-2 exception, Sec. 1(a) caps the underlying fence at a minimum of six feet and a maximum of eight feet, and permits topping it with no more than three strands of barbed wire, provided the lowest strand sits no lower than six feet six inches above the ground and angles inward toward the property rather than outward over a public way.

That same commercial-district section requires outdoor commercial storage areas to be shielded from public ways and residential districts by solid walls, nondeciduous hedges, or solid fences at least six feet but no more than eight feet tall, with gated access kept closed except when in use. Sec. 7-3(b) sets the affirmative list of materials allowed everywhere else: masonry, manufactured wood, chain link, chain link with slatting, and trimmed nondeciduous hedges in commercial areas only, so any material outside that list, plus barbed wire or electrified fencing outside their narrow exceptions, cannot be permitted under Sec. 7-3(a).
