All consumer fireworks are illegal in the City of Escondido and throughout San Diego County. This includes sparklers, firecrackers, cherry bombs, bottle rockets, poppers, and all items marketed as 'safe and sane.' Escondido's inland location surrounded by fire-prone hills and dense chaparral makes fireworks particularly dangerous. The 2007 Witch Creek Fire devastated the area and reinforced the need for strict enforcement. Only professional fireworks displays with proper permits from the Escondido Fire Department are allowed. The ban is enforced year-round, with heightened enforcement around July 4th and New Year's Eve. Escondido Fire Department and Police Department conduct joint enforcement operations during high-risk periods.
Misdemeanor. Fines up to $1,000 and/or 6 months jail. Confiscation of fireworks. Restitution for any fire damage caused.
