All consumer fireworks are illegal in El Cajon and throughout San Diego County. This includes sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets, poppers, and all items marketed as safe and sane. Only professional fireworks displays with permits are allowed. The ban is strictly enforced due to San Diego County's extreme wildfire risk. El Cajon's location in the East County valley, with hot dry summers and Santa Ana wind exposure, makes the fire risk particularly acute. The surrounding hillsides and canyon areas are highly vulnerable. El Cajon Police and Heartland Fire & Rescue conduct enforcement operations around July 4th and New Year's Eve.
Misdemeanor. Fines up to $1,000 and/or 6 months jail. Restitution for fire damage. Confiscation of fireworks.
