Smoke alarms in Montebello homes follow the California Residential and Fire Codes, adopted in the Municipal Code and enforced by the city's own Fire Department. Detectors are required in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on each level, with carbon monoxide alarms also required.
Montebello adopts the California Residential Code (MMC Chapter 15.68) and the 2019 California Fire Code (MMC Chapter 15.32), enforced by the independent Montebello Fire Prevention Bureau. Smoke alarms must be installed in each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area near bedrooms, and on every level including basements. New construction and additions require interconnected, hardwired alarms with battery backup; existing homes need working alarms. State law (Health & Safety Code 13113.7) also requires carbon monoxide alarms where there are fuel-burning appliances, a fireplace, or attached garage, and battery-only alarms must use sealed ten-year batteries. As a stricter local rule, any new nonresidential building over 2,500 square feet must have an NFPA 72 alarm transmitting automatically to the Fire Department (MMC 15.32.340).
Missing or non-working smoke or carbon monoxide alarms are code violations enforceable by the Fire Department and building officials, flagged at sale, permit inspection, or complaint. Nonresidential buildings lacking the required NFPA 72 system (MMC 15.32.340) must install one.
