Muncie City Code § 150.222(C)(5) folds the home-occupation sign rule into the special-use conditions, and § 150.212(D)(1) spells out the same limit from the sign chapter's side: a home occupation sign is defined as a sign stating solely the name of a person and the name of the permitted home occupation, and it is only permitted once the property has obtained a special-use home-occupation approval from the metropolitan board of zoning appeals. Both sections cap the sign at one square foot, require it to be mounted flat against the residential structure, and prohibit any illumination.

Unlike some of the signs allowed without a permit elsewhere in § 150.212, a home occupation sign requires its own sign permit before it goes up, and the city's sign-permit fee schedule in § 150.212(J) sets the fee for a home occupation sign at $15.00. Section 150.222(C)(5) also makes the sign the only exception to a broader rule: there shall be no other change in the outside appearance of the dwelling or the premises, and no other visible evidence of the home occupation at all.

That means no additional signage, no storefront-style window displays, and no exterior alteration marking the property as a place of business beyond the single one-square-foot sign. Installing a larger sign, an illuminated sign, or a second sign puts the operator in violation of both § 150.222(C)(5) and § 150.212(D)(1), and because the home occupation is a special use granted by the board of zoning appeals under §§ 150.215 and 150.216, an oversized or unauthorized sign can also jeopardize the underlying special-use approval itself. A general violation of the sign chapter carries a fine of not more than $1,000.00 per offense under § 150.212(K)(2).
