Redlands, CA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

The City of Redlands' home occupation standards expressly bar business signage. As stated by the City and on the Home Occupation Permit application: 'The home occupation shall not involve the use of advertising signs on the premises, or any other local advertising media which calls attention to the fact that the home is being used for business purposes, telephone number listing excepted.' This is one of the strictest aspects of the home-occupation rules - even a small nameplate or window sign advertising the business is not allowed, because the intent is that the residence look and function like an ordinary home with no outward evidence of commercial activity. The only carve-out is listing the business telephone number (for example in a directory). On-premises commercial signage generally is governed by the City's Sign Code (RMC Chapter 15.36), but for home occupations the operative rule is the flat prohibition in the home-occupation standards. Owners who need any business-identification signage typically must locate the business in a commercial zone where the Sign Code permits signs.
