Weston, FL Landscaping Rules: Composting (2026)

Weston's Landscape and Irrigation Plan requirements in § 123.10 require an applicant's plan to show how the project complies with the Florida Friendly Landscaping Guide to Plant Selection and Landscape Design, which the state requires under F.S. § 373.185. Subsection 123.10(A)(18) then narrows what the City actually adopts from that state guide: 'The City adopts the Florida Friendly Landscape Program, except for the provisions relating to attraction of wildlife, above ground rain barrels, above ground cisterns, and composting.' That single sentence is the entirety of Weston's treatment of composting; a search of the full Code of Ordinances turns up no separate section regulating compost bins, pile setbacks, materials, or odor standards for residential or commercial properties.

Because the exclusion is written into the landscape plan chapter rather than a nuisance or solid waste chapter, it functions as a deliberate omission rather than an affirmative composting standard: the City chose not to import the state guide's composting provisions into local law, but it has not replaced them with rules of its own. Residents and homeowners' associations who compost on their property are therefore not subject to a Weston-specific size, location, or maintenance requirement; any restriction would have to come from a private HOA covenant, from the general property maintenance and nuisance provisions elsewhere in the Code, or from Broward County or state law rather than from Chapter 123.
