Kenner, LA Noise from Specific Sources: Generator Noise (2026)

Kenner's noise code does not use the word 'generator,' but it reaches generator noise directly through its engine clause. Section 7-166(b)(16) declares it a violation to operate any noise-creating blower or power fan or any internal combustion engine, the operation of which causes noise due to the explosion of operating gases or fluids, unless the noise from such blower or fan is muffled and such engine is equipped with a muffler device sufficient to deaden such noise. A portable generator is an internal combustion engine within that description, so running one without an adequate muffler, whether for a home during a power outage, a food truck near Laketown, or a construction site, falls under this clause.

The provision has no exempted hours or duration, unlike the construction-noise clause in § 7-166(b)(10), which allows building work between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.; the generator clause turns solely on whether the exhaust noise is muffled. It sits within the same section as the general prohibition in § 7-166(a) on 'any loud, unnecessary or unusual noise... within the limits of the city,' and the § 7-166(b) list is expressly non-exclusive. The Kenner Police Department enforces the section on complaint. Since § 7-166 sets no fine of its own, a violation is punished under the general Chapter 7 penalty, § 7-3: up to a $500 fine, up to sixty days in jail, or both, with each day of continued unmuffled operation a separate offense.
