Berwyn, IL Noise Ordinances: Quiet Hours (2026)

Section 666.02 opens with a citywide standard: no person can make or cause loud, unnecessary or unusual noises, or noises which annoy, disturb, injure or endanger the comfort, repose, health, peace or safety of others in the city. The list of prohibited actions that follows is not exhaustive, and three items carry clock times. Division (C) covers yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing on the public streets, particularly between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. of the next day, or at any other time or place, so as to annoy or disturb the quiet, comfort or repose of persons in the vicinity.

The 11:00 p.m. window is the highlighted period, not the only one, because the same noise is barred at any other time when it disturbs people nearby. Division (L) bans the operation, between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. of the next day, of any pile driver, steam shovel, pneumatic hammer, derrick, steam or electric hoist or other appliance whose use is attended by loud or unusual noise. Division (N) bans collection of garbage, refuse, rubbish or other waste between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. of the next day, inclusive.

Building work has its own daytime window in division (I): 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekends. Division (J) adds protection for streets next to schools, churches, courts and hospitals, but only where conspicuous signs are displayed. Because the timed rules attach to particular noises, a resident should match the noise to the division rather than look for one universal curfew hour.
