Berwyn, IL Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

Section 666.02(I), Construction or repair of buildings, sets the hours. The erection of a building, including excavating, demolition, alteration or repair, is allowed between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekends. The text names only weekdays and weekends and lists no holiday schedule. Work outside those windows is barred except in case of urgent necessity in the interest of public health and safety, and then only with a permit from the Director of Public Works. That emergency permit is granted for a period of not more than three days while the emergency continues and is renewable for periods of not more than three days while the emergency continues.

The Director has a second path: if he or she determines that public health and safety will not be impaired by work between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. of the next day, and further determines that loss or inconvenience would result to a person in interest, the Director can grant permission for the work to be done between those hours. The application must be made at the time the permit for the work is awarded or during the progress of the work. Heavy equipment has an additional night limit in division (L), which bars operating any pile driver, steam shovel, pneumatic hammer, derrick, steam or electric hoist or other loud appliance between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. of the next day.

Section 666.03 also bars locating a foundry, machine shop or factory using pneumatic hammers or shovels within 200 feet of any residence. Contractors should treat the 6:00 p.m. cutoff as the same on weekdays and weekends, with the earlier start on weekdays being the only difference.
