Jackson, NJ Parking Rules: Abandoned Vehicles (2026)

Chapter 418 of the Jackson Township Code targets motor vehicles and other machinery left, abandoned or stored out of doors that are not currently in use for transportation or licensed for the current year, finding in Section 418-1 that such storage depreciates neighboring property values. Section 418-2 bars keeping any such article outdoors on public land or between the sidelines of a public right-of-way, and on private property caps outdoor storage at one currently unregistered or uninspected motor vehicle; no vehicle may sit outdoors in a state of major disassembly, disrepair, or in the process of being stripped or dismantled, though storage inside an enclosed garage, barn or other building is not restricted at all.

Under Section 418-3, leaving such an article on private land for 15 days or more creates a presumption that the property's owner or tenant put it there. On private land, the Police Department, Code Enforcer or Building Inspector must give the owner or tenant written notice under Section 418-4 to remove the vehicle or move it into an enclosed building within 10 days of service; on public land or within a right-of-way, Section 418-5 lets officers move a hazardous vehicle immediately and otherwise requires 10 days' written notice before removal.

An impounded vehicle not reclaimed within 30 days, or another impounded article not reclaimed within six months, is deemed forfeited and sold under Section 418-6, following the disposal procedures of N.J.S.A. 39:10A-1 for motor vehicles. Enforcement of Chapter 418 runs through the Police Department, Code Enforcer and Building Inspector, all designated as enforcement officers under Section 418-4.
