Lubbock Code Section 26-231 and Texas Transportation Code Chapter 683 govern abandoned vehicles. Junked or inoperable vehicles visible from public view on private property must be removed within 10 days of notice.
An abandoned vehicle on a public street is any vehicle left more than 48 hours after a police tag, or 72 hours in a no-parking zone, or any vehicle that is wrecked, dismantled, or inoperable. On private property, a junked vehicle under Texas Transportation Code Section 683.071 is one that is inoperable and either wrecked, dismantled, or lacks current registration or inspection for more than 30 days and is visible from a public place. Lubbock Code Enforcement issues a 10-day notice to remove, store inside a garage, or fully screen the vehicle. Unclaimed vehicles towed from public streets are sold at City auction after statutory notice.
Failure to abate junked vehicle: Class C misdemeanor up to 200 dollars per Section 683.074, plus tow.
