Alpharetta, GA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 2.5.4.B of the Unified Development Code targets oversized and commercial trucks parked at homes across the City of Alpharetta. Any vehicle used for business, any vehicle tied to a home occupation, or any vehicle with a carrying capacity above one and one-half tons cannot be regularly parked or stored in a residential district. The Ordinance carves out one exception: pickup or panel trucks that provide daily transportation to and from work stay legal in every residential district, so a contractor's personal pickup is fine while a box truck or dump truck is not.

This rule sits alongside Section 2.3.3.C.2, which treats a single commercial vehicle of 1-ton-or-more capacity as a customary accessory use, letting one such truck per family occupy open storage or a parking area on the lot as long as the space does not exceed the storage capacities the Ordinance sets for that property. Vehicles without current license plates face a tighter standard under Section 2.5.4.C: they must sit inside a fully enclosed building unless the owner already had a long-standing, lawful nonconforming storage practice in place before the June 1994 effective date, or unless the Director of Community Development grants a hardship variance.
