Commercial vehicles over 2.5 tons cannot park overnight on Somerville residential streets. Loading zones are time-limited and signed by block.
Somerville Traffic Commission rules prohibit any commercial vehicle rated over 2.5 tons (5,000 pounds) from parking on a residential street between specified nighttime hours, typically 10 PM to 6 AM. Box trucks, stake-body trucks, landscaping trailers, and contractor pickups with commercial plates must return to a yard or commercial district overnight. Loading zones in Union, Davis, and Ball Squares are signed for 15 or 30 minute deliveries and are enforced strictly. Commercial vehicles displaying a valid resident permit may still be cited if they exceed weight or length limits for the zone. Vehicles with dealer or livery plates are treated as commercial for parking purposes. Food service delivery drivers must use posted loading zones or valet zones and cannot idle more than 5 minutes under Massachusetts anti-idling law (MGL c.90 s.16A).
