Lenexa, KS Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

The base rule in Section 3-8-B-2 applies to every vehicle, not only recreational ones. Nobody can park a vehicle or any portion thereof on any grass, vegetated area or yard area unless otherwise authorized by the City. The Code defines a front yard as the yard across the full width of the lot from the front line of the building to the front line of the lot, so a car cannot be left on the lawn between the house and the street. The section prints no permit process for the exception; the City decides what counts as authorized.

Recreational vehicles, watercraft, camping trailers and personal hauling trailers fall under the Code's separate Device rules for the Residential Zoning Districts (AG, RE, RP-E, R-1 and RP-1 through RP-5). The area where a Device is parked must be clean and neat, and the Device must stay in usable and working condition. The surface must be dust-free and rut-free. The Code accepts areas covered with grass or ground cover (but not exposed dirt), existing gravel, water-permeable grass paver, cement, asphalt or other similar material. That is how the Code separates a permitted pad from a rutted yard.

Placement is tied to the house. A Device in a side yard or rear yard sits behind the front building line of the house and as close to the main building as possible. On a corner lot, a Device that cannot fit in the rear yard or the non-street side yard can go in the street side yard, but never within fifteen feet, measured from the closest curb, of any public street. Side and rear yard Devices also need screening to their full height and length by fencing, vegetation or both, so they are not visible from adjacent public streets or from the ground level of neighboring properties. Fencing used for screening follows Section 4-1-B-24-F-5, with permits from the Community Development Department to exceed the height limit, never above twelve feet.

Driveway storage is a different, time-limited category covered in the Device rules: a Device can sit in a driveway for no more than four separate twenty-four hour periods within a thirty day span, with a temporary permit route from the Community Development Department for longer needs.
