Lenexa, KS Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 3-8-B-2 opens its list of General Restrictions And Prohibitions with the words "No person shall" and then names each banned act. Nobody can park a motor vehicle on any part of a designated bicycle path or sidewalk, and nobody can park on grass, a vegetated area or a yard area unless the City authorizes it. Between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., except Sundays and Holidays, a vehicle cannot stand within 5 feet of a street side mailbox. Parking on a Primary Arterial or Secondary Arterial, as those terms are defined in Section 4-3-D-2 of the Unified Development Code, is prohibited unless an official traffic-control device designates the road for on-street parking or the City otherwise authorizes it. Signed reserved spots are enforced too: a vehicle cannot use a spot marked for authorized vehicles on specific dates or times.

The section also reaches private lots. Parking on private property, a private commercial parking area or a private residential common area needs the consent of the owner or agent. A vehicle cannot be used as living quarters. Parking a vehicle on public property to advertise it for sale or lease is prohibited in every zoning district, and on private property it needs the owner's written consent unless vehicle sales are the primary business.

Item g pulls in the Standard Traffic Ordinance for Kansas Cities, Edition of 2025, adopted by reference in Section 3-8-A-1, so a violation of its parking rules is also a violation here. The Code does not reprint that ordinance; an official marked copy is on file with the City Clerk. Blocking a driveway is not a separate line in Section 3-8-B-2. The City defines parking as the standing of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, other than temporarily while actually loading or unloading property or passengers. Subsection B makes the named owners on the title or registration document jointly and severally responsible for any unlawful act in subsection A, so the registered owner answers for a car even when someone else left it. Under Section 3-8-C-1-A the Lenexa Police Department can immediately tow an unattended vehicle whose location or condition poses a danger to public health, safety or welfare.
