Storage of recreational vehicles, travel trailers, vessels, and vessel trailers on private property in unincorporated Contra Costa County requires that the unit be adequately screened from view from public roadways. Use for living or sleeping is prohibited.
Per Contra Costa County Ordinance Code Section 84-68.1404 (Title 8 Zoning, Division 84 Land Use Districts, Chapter 84-68), the storage of mobile homes, recreational vehicles, travel trailers, vessels, and vessel trailers on private property is allowed only if the unit is adequately screened from view from all public roadways or thoroughfares. Screening may be achieved through landscaping, fencing, or an intervening building. The county's Code Enforcement FAQ notes that this screening requirement is rarely achievable when a unit is parked in a front driveway, so RVs and boats parked openly in front of a home will typically be in violation. Additionally, the unit may not be used for living or sleeping purposes.
Violations are enforced by Contra Costa County Code Enforcement (Department of Conservation & Development) and may result in courtesy notices, formal notices of violation, administrative fines, and abatement orders.
