Martinez Municipal Code Title 17 (Zoning) and Title 10 regulate the storage of recreational vehicles, boats, trailers, and utility trailers on residential property. In most residential zones (R-1, R-2), RVs, boats on trailers, and utility trailers may not be stored in the front yard setback area or in street-facing side yards where visible from the public right-of-way. Permitted storage is typically in the rear yard, an interior side yard behind a solid 6-foot fence or gate, or fully enclosed within a garage or accessory structure. Loading and unloading for trips is generally allowed for short periods (commonly 48-72 hours) adjacent to the residence. On the public street, RVs, boats, and trailers are subject to California Vehicle Code Section 22651(k)'s 72-hour limit, and where oversized vehicle signs are posted under CVC 22507.5 additional restrictions apply. Using an RV or trailer as a dwelling unit on a residential lot (even on private property) is generally prohibited without a permit, though temporary use during construction of a primary residence may be permitted for limited periods. Hillside and waterfront lots near the Martinez Marina and Alhambra Creek may have additional screening requirements due to visual impact considerations.
