Huntington, NY Public Health Rules: Syringe Disposal (2026)

Huntington Code § 117-1 defines "MEDICAL WASTE, REGULATED (RMW)" to include "needles and syringes (sharps) except for those used residentially for maintenance of chronic medical conditions," along with human blood and blood products, pathological waste and other biohazard materials generated in research, production or health-care testing. Because that definition specifically excludes sharps a resident uses to manage their own chronic condition (for example diabetic insulin needles), those household sharps fall outside the regulated-medical-waste category, while any needles, syringes or other sharps generated by a clinic, lab or health care practice remain regulated medical waste.

Section 117-25, Unacceptable waste, then bars any licensee from collecting and any person from placing for collection or delivering to a Town facility "any hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, regulated batteries, mixed loads of construction and demolition material, cow or horse manure, or electronic waste," with only household hazardous waste and electronic waste allowed to go to the Town's designated Recycling Center. " Together these sections mean regulated sharps from a medical practice cannot go in curbside trash, recycling, or be dropped at the Town's transfer station at all; residents with regulated sharps need a licensed medical-waste hauler, while chronic-condition household sharps are not swept into that ban by the definition itself.
