Canton, OH Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 1187.23 of the Canton Codified Ordinances creates a special allowance for properties near freeway interchanges. A property containing one or more retail businesses within six hundred sixty feet, one-eighth of a mile, of the nearest freeway exit ramp may erect one additional free-standing sign beyond what Chapter 1187 otherwise permits for that property. The distance is measured from the intersection of the exit ramp and public street centerlines to the property's nearest line. The freeway interchange sign cannot exceed twenty-five feet in height above grade at the base of the sign structure, and its sign face cannot exceed fifty square feet, an allowance added on top of whatever sign area the property already qualifies for.

Placement is tightly controlled: the sign must sit on the business premises and be set back at least five feet from the freeway right-of-way, ten feet from other street rights-of-way, twenty-five feet from interior lot lines, and fifty feet from any Residential District line, and it must be oriented for readability from the freeway. Section 1187.23(e) defines eligible retail businesses as any non-residential use permitted in the General Retail zoning district, so a use that would not qualify as General Retail cannot claim the extra sign even if it sits near an interchange.

Like other freestanding signs, the freeway interchange sign is limited to non-illumination under subsection (f), and it must go through the same zoning permit process the Zoning Inspector administers for signs under Chapter 1187.
