Canton, OH Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 1187.17 lists the signs the City of Canton, Ohio allows in every zoning district without a zoning permit. Alongside real estate signs, temporary construction signs, on-premise directional signs, temporary sidewalk or roadside signs and nameplates, subsection (a)(5) permits political signs so long as they are non-illuminated and no larger than thirty-two square feet. Because political signs fall on this permit-exempt list, a candidate or campaign does not need to file a zoning application or pay a permit fee before posting one, unlike the freestanding, wall and digital signs regulated under later sections of Chapter 1187.

The size cap applies regardless of the message on the sign: a non-illuminated political sign of thirty-two square feet or less is treated the same as any other exempt sign under subsection (a), while any political sign that is illuminated or exceeds that area falls outside the exemption and would instead need to satisfy the permit and district standards that apply to the sign type it resembles, such as a freestanding or wall sign under Sections 1187.19 or 1187.20. The exemption sits in Chapter 1187, the same chapter that requires a zoning permit for signs generally under Section 1194.02(e), so the Zoning Inspector who administers that chapter is the enforcing official for any political sign that does not qualify for the exemption. Canton's list of permit-free signs treats political signage as a fixed size category rather than granting unlimited number or duration.
