Canton, OH Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Canton's garage sale ordinance treats sign placement as a distinct rule inside the same Section 1142.01 that limits how often and how long a sale can run. Paragraph (c) bars any sign advertising a garage sale from being placed on telephone poles, trees, or other public property, and confines advertising signs to the property where the sale is actually held, unless the resident gets permission from a different private property owner to post there instead. Timing is also fixed: a sign may not go up more than twenty-four hours before the sale begins and must come down within twenty-four hours after it ends, so signs cannot linger in yards or on poles advertising a sale that already happened.

The paragraph adds a nuisance-control rule found nowhere else in the sign code: garage sale signs may not use lights or sound, which rules out illuminated arrow signs, flashing lights or any sign paired with an audio announcement. Because this sign rule lives inside the residential garage sale chapter rather than the citywide Sign Code, it applies specifically and only to signs advertising a garage sale under Section 1142.01, and Section 1142.01(d) makes the property owner or tenant in charge of the sale responsible for making sure any signs posted for it, wherever located, are removed on time.
