Canton, OH Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 1187.20(i) governs window signs for non-residential uses in the City of Canton's Business and Industrial Districts. Permanent window signs, defined as those etched, painted or permanently affixed to the glass, may cover no more than 25% of the total window area of a single storefront. When temporary window signs are added to permanent ones, the combined coverage on that storefront may not exceed 35% of the total window area, meaning a storefront that already uses the full 25% permanent allowance has only 10% of its window area left for temporary signage such as posters or sale banners.

Illumination of window signs is tightly limited: Section 1187.20(i)(2) permits only neon lighting, subject to the general illumination regulations of Section 1187.07, so internally lit signboards or back-lit letters allowed for other sign types under the same chapter are not an option for window signs. The window sign provision sits alongside the chapter's other Business and Industrial sign-type rules covering wall, projecting, awning, marquee and freestanding signs, all under the same permit structure administered by the Zoning Inspector. A separate, narrower window-sign allowance applies in the City's Open Space, Community Service and Urban Garden Districts under Section 1187.18(e), which caps window signage at 15% of a building frontage's window area rather than the 25%/35% split used in Business and Industrial Districts, so the applicable cap depends on the district in which the storefront sits.
