Jackson, NJ Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Township Code § 244-6 defines a private sale or special event sign as a temporary sign advertising house sales, garage sales, rummage sales, yard sales and similar private events, and requires it be removed within seven days of the sale's end. The operative regulation, § 244-207B(14), permits one such nonilluminated sign per lot, capped at four square feet, placed no closer than five feet and no farther than 20 feet from the street right-of-way or any property line. The sign cannot be affixed to trees, fences, fence posts, utility poles or towers, or to any other sign.

Total display time across all a homeowner's private sales cannot exceed 30 days out of a calendar year. Private sale and special event signs are one of the few sign types exempted from Jackson's general sign-permit requirement under § 244-207C, so no permit or fee applies. General sign standards in § 244-207A still apply, including the five-foot property-line clearance and a ban on locating any sign in a sight easement or right-of-way where it would create a traffic hazard. The Division of Land Use and Code Enforcement handle compliance, and any location where signage remains past the allowed window can be ordered removed at the property owner's expense.
