Jackson, NJ Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Township Code § 244-6 defines a window sign as any sign affixed to a window or visible through a window from outside, and states directly in the definition that it cannot exceed 25% of the total window area where it is located. The operative regulation, § 244-207B(19), repeats that ceiling in mandatory terms: no window sign, whether permanent or temporary, may exceed 25% of the total window area. Because the limit is written as a hard percentage rather than a discretionary standard, a shopkeeper measuring compliance only needs the glass area of the window in question.

Whether a permit is required depends on size: § 244-207A(1) makes a sign permit the default requirement for any sign display, but § 244-207C(3) exempts signs of two square feet or less, which covers small temporary window notices. Larger seasonal-sale or storefront lettering that approaches the 25% cap will typically exceed that two-square-foot exemption and needs a permit from the administrative officer. General sign standards also apply, including the ban on signs that obstruct required light, air or a required means of egress under § 244-207A(17)-(18), which is relevant for storefronts that cover most of a door-adjacent window. Enforcement runs through the administrative officer designated under § 244-13, who inspects premises and can order written correction of any nonconforming display.
