Kenner, LA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Kenner treats garage and yard sale signs as a narrow, self-executing exemption inside its Temporary Signs article, Section 11.05(c) of the Unified Development Code. Because these signs are listed as exempt, a homeowner does not need to apply for a sign permit or pay a fee before posting one, unlike most other signage in the City. The exemption comes with three hard limits. First, size is capped at nine square feet per sign, smaller than nearly every other exempt sign category in the ordinance, including the six-square-foot cap on residential real estate signs and the thirty-two-square-foot cap on political signs.

Second, timing is strictly bracketed: a sign cannot go up more than twenty-four hours before the garage or yard sale begins, and every sign must come down within twenty-four hours after the sale ends, so a sign cannot linger through a multi-day sale without being taken down and reposted for each event. Third, placement is restricted: the signs may not be posted in the public right-of-way, which includes the grassy strip and sidewalk area the City controls along most residential streets, and they may not be posted off-premises, meaning a homeowner cannot plant directional signs on a neighbor's yard or at a distant intersection to steer traffic to the sale.

These placement and timing limits mirror the City's general prohibition on signs in the right-of-way found in Section 11.03(f)(13), which bars any sign from encroaching into a public right-of-way except for subdivision name signs approved during the subdivision process.
