Mount Prospect, IL Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 7.202 of the Mount Prospect Village Code lists the signs exempted from the general provisions of the sign chapter and from every permit requirement in it. Subsection C covers commercial temporary signs: signs located on the property that relate to a temporary commercial activity taking place on that property. The Village Code names garage sales in its own list of examples, alongside for sale/lease signs, help wanted signs and contractor signs.

On single-family residential properties the sign cannot exceed ten square feet in area or six feet in height from base or established grade. Only one sign is allowed per street frontage, and it must be removed within three days after it no longer meets its intended purpose, which for a garage sale means the end of the sale. On other properties the limits are sixteen square feet and six feet in height, the sign must sit on private property and cannot be attached to any parking light pole or tree, and a sign left up for a lasting use still comes down within one year at the outside.

Placement is tightened by Article II. Section 7.201 prohibits any sign located in or extending over the public right of way unless the Village Board authorizes it, and it separately prohibits signs on light poles. A garage sale sign belongs on the sale property itself.

The sale is governed by Article XIX of Chapter 23. Sales run for three consecutive days between nine o'clock A.M. and sunset, no more than three sales are allowed on the same premises in a calendar year, and thirty days must separate them. Section 23.1903 requires the sale to be conducted from the residence premises of the person obtaining a permit and makes it unlawful to display goods for sale on any public sidewalk or public right-of-way.
