Caldwell allows political signs to be posted no more than 60 days before an election and requires removal within 10 days after election day. Signs must not damage public property, need the property owner's permission, and no electric political signs are allowed in residential districts. Signs in the right of way or vision triangle may be removed by city staff.
Caldwell regulates political signs within its sign code at City Code 10-02-06. Political signs shall be posted no more than 60 days prior to an election and shall be removed within 10 days following election day, and they shall not be destructive to public property upon posting or removal. Before placing any political signage on private property, the person posting must obtain permission from the private property owner. No electric political signs are allowed in residential districts. Sign placement is also constrained by the city's right-of-way and vision-triangle rules: any sign placed illegally within a public right of way, right-of-way area, or vision triangle, or that presents an immediate vehicular or pedestrian safety hazard, may be removed and disposed of by city staff with or without notification, and no sign taller than 3 feet is permitted in a vision triangle except publicly placed traffic-directing devices. As a content-neutral baseline, single-family and two-family residential properties in the RS-1, RS-2, and R-1 districts are permitted signs not exceeding 6 square feet in total sign area per road frontage. Candidates and residents should keep political signs on private property, within the 6-square-foot residential allowance, and out of the public right of way and vision triangle.
Posting a political sign more than 60 days before an election, failing to remove it within 10 days after election day, placing it on private property without the owner's permission, using an electric political sign in a residential district, or planting signs in the right of way or vision triangle can result in removal by city staff and code-enforcement action.
