Caldwell, ID Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Window signage in Caldwell's commercial and industrial sign schedule, covering the C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4, H-C, M-1, M-2 and I-P districts, gets its own dedicated rule rather than folding into the general wall-sign allotment. Section 10-02-06-8(2)(F) allows a window sign in any window that fronts a street or alley, but caps the total window signage on each building façade at twenty-five percent of that façade's window area, a ceiling the code states is for security purposes, meaning it exists so passersby, police and emergency responders retain a clear sightline into the storefront rather than facing a wall of vinyl lettering or posters.

The twenty-five percent is measured per façade, so a corner storefront with windows on two street-facing walls tracks the limit separately on each wall rather than pooling the coverage across the whole building. Caldwell's residential sign schedule, § 10-02-06-7, treats window signage differently: it lets single-family and two-family properties display a sign in a window as one of three allowed placement methods, freestanding, building-mounted, or window, within the same six-square-foot, four-foot-height cap that governs every sign on that property, with no separate percentage-of-window rule. Window signs still need a sign permit before installation under the article's general provisions, § 10-02-06-2(1), and merchandise displayed in a window is treated separately: § 10-02-06-2(19) confirms that displaying merchandise itself does not count as signage.
