LEMC § 17.196.160 governs temporary promotional signage citywide, and subsection (F) sets the window-sign exemption apart from the pennants, banners, flags and inflatable devices the rest of the section otherwise regulates with permits and per-occurrence time limits under Planning Division review. Under § 17.196.160(F)(1), a temporary window sign needs no permit at all as long as its area does not exceed 25 percent of the window it is posted in; there is no separate durational limit for an ordinary promotional window sign the way there is for the holiday window decorations addressed next in subsection (F)(2).

Because the exemption is tied strictly to windows, a sign that extends onto the exterior wall, door frame or building facade around the window is not covered and instead falls under the chapter's general sign standards, which can require a permit reviewed by the Planning Division and impose size limits keyed to the zoning district and building frontage. The Building Division can still act against a noncompliant window sign the same way it acts against any other sign violation: § 17.196.050 authorizes a stop order against installation or continued display of a sign that violates the sign title, independent of whether a permit was ever required for that sign type.
