Lake Elsinore, CA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Lake Elsinore folds sign rules into its yard-sale ordinance rather than the general sign code. Anyone holding a yard, patio, garage or house sale, defined in 5.112.010 as selling common household goods on residentially zoned property, must first obtain a nontransferable City yard sale permit under 5.112.060; sales under court order, by charitable or civic organizations for their own benefit, by a licensed business at its own premises, or offering three items or fewer are exempt under 5.112.020. A household may hold no more than three yard sales per calendar year, each lasting no more than three consecutive days and spaced at least three months apart, and sales may run only between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. under 5.112.030; the Community Development Director can approve an extra sale for a change of ownership, an estate sale, a foreclosure or another documented hardship.

Once authorized, 5.112.050 caps advertising to two on-site signs of four square feet or less, displayed only while the sale is running and removed the moment it ends; the code bars any additional signage, including on public property such as street medians or utility poles. Merchandise itself cannot spill onto sidewalks, streets or rights-of-way under 5.112.040.
