Swimming pool fencing in Compton must meet CA Building Code Title 24 Chapter 31 standards. Minimum 60-inch barrier height is required. Self-closing, self-latching gates mandatory. One additional safety feature required under the Swimming Pool Safety Act.
Under the California Swimming Pool Safety Act (SB442), adopted by Compton through the California Building Standards Code, all new or remodeled in-ground pools must have a physical barrier and at least two of the seven approved drowning prevention safety features. The enclosure must be a minimum of 60 inches in height. The maximum ground clearance is 2 inches. Gaps in the enclosure must not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. The exterior surface must be free of handholds or footholds that could allow a child under 5 to climb over. Gates must open away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching with the latch at least 60 inches above ground. The two required safety features may include: approved fence/enclosure, removable mesh fencing (ASTM F2286), safety pool cover, exit alarms, self-closing/self-latching doors (release at 54 inches), or pool alarms.
Non-compliant pool enclosures face legal penalties, fines, permit delays, and potential homeowner liability for injuries.
