California H&S Code 115922 requires residential pools to have an enclosure at least 60 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates. Fontana enforces state barrier standards plus CBC code.
Under California Health and Safety Code section 115922, every new or remodeled residential swimming pool in Fontana must be enclosed by a barrier at least 60 inches in height measured from the outside of the barrier. Maximum clearance under the barrier is 2 inches above grade and 4 inches above a non-solid surface. Openings in the barrier cannot exceed 4 inches. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, and have a self-latching device with the release mechanism at least 54 inches above the ground. If any wall of the dwelling serves as part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool area must have either a pool alarm or self-closing hardware. The California Pool Safety Act requires the builder to give the pool owner written notice of the drowning prevention safety features selected. Barriers must be installed before the pool is filled. Contact Fontana Building and Safety for specific barrier approval.
