Bensalem, PA Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Sec. 107-5.2(b) of the Bensalem Township Code sets the placement window for residential refuse: containers may go out at the curb or street line, at ground level, no earlier than 24 hours before the scheduled collection date and time, and owners and occupiers must bring them back within 24 hours after collection. Farm properties are excluded from that rule under Sec. 107-5.2(c). The storage standards at Sec. 107-5.4 add the container specifications behind that placement window: every property must keep sufficient approved containers in sanitary condition, with garbage and rubbish stored in a tight-fitting, watertight, fly-proof container a collector can carry easily, drained of liquids and bagged before it goes in.

Residential containers must hold not less than 20 gallons and not more than 35 gallons, absent a special exception from the Township, and must otherwise sit on the owner's property, not at the curb, until the 24-hour placement window opens. Yard waste, magazines and newspapers are the narrow exceptions to the container rule: yard waste may sit next to containers if bundled to no more than four feet long, 20 inches across and 45 pounds, and papers may be tied or boxed up to 50 pounds.

When collection day finally arrives, Sec. 107-5.5(g)(1) requires the containers to be at the curb or street line, at ground level, and readily accessible to the collector, though a property owner may agree with the collector on a different pickup point under Sec. 107-5.5(g)(2).
