Bensalem, PA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Bensalem Township Code Section 107-5.5(c)(1) sets the general rule that all household solid waste is collected at least once each week, but it carves out bulky waste and dead animals: for those, the resident must make arrangements in advance with the collector rather than relying on the standing weekly pickup. Section 107-7 defines "bulk items" broadly to include large durable goods such as refrigerators, washing machines, window air conditioners, hot-water heaters, dishwashers and other major home appliances, plus other large household items like dressers, beds, mattresses, sofas and television sets.

Because ordinary collection trucks in the Township must run enclosed or compacting bodies under Section 107-5.8(a), bulky items are the recognized exception: Section 107-5.8(b) permits an open-type vehicle specifically for collecting large debris items too big to be handled by ordinary enclosed equipment. Collection itself must come from a municipality-authorized contracted collector or a private collector licensed under Section 107-5.7, since Section 107-5.2(g) makes it unlawful for anyone else to collect and dispose of solid waste, bulky or otherwise, within the Township. Institutional, commercial, industrial and municipal facilities generating bulky waste are collected as often as their generated volume and any environmental problems require, rather than on the fixed weekly residential schedule.
