Berwyn, IL Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Section 1060.03 of the Berwyn Code of Ordinances requires every owner or tenant occupying premises in the city to provide a separate receptacle for each class of waste: garbage or refuse, landscape waste and recyclable materials. Under division (A), the receptacles are specified and approved from time to time by Council under the contract with the private collector or disposal contractor. Division (B) puts sizing on the owner or tenant: receptacles must be sufficient in size and number to hold one week's accumulation of that class of waste, and must be maintained in good order at all times.

Division (C) requires commercially constructed receptacles with close-fitting covers that are watertight, and prohibits concrete receptacles. Division (D) requires filthy, leaky or defective receptacles to be promptly cleaned and repaired, or replaced with new ones. Division (E) is the placement rule: receptacles go close to the public alley abutting the property and must be easily accessible to the collector, while keeping or storing receptacles on a street, alley, park or public place is prohibited. Division (F) adds a content rule: garbage and refuse must be drained of moisture and wrapped in paper or plastic before going in, and receptacles with frozen contents or holding water, slop, manure, animal feces or similar offensive matter will not be emptied by the collector.

The section prints no set-out hour. Collection itself is alleyside under §§ 1060.09 and 1060.10, and § 1060.08 separately makes the owner or tenant keep the alley to its centerline clear of barrels, boxes, refuse and rubbish.
