Berwyn, IL Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 1060.09 of the Berwyn Code of Ordinances creates the Recyclable Materials Program. The program area, defined in § 1060.01, covers all single-family residences and multi-family residences with four or fewer dwelling units. The recyclable materials are newsprint, paper, recyclable plastics, aluminum cans and glass of all colors. Under division (B), collection is weekly at alleyside, separate from the normal refuse collection, but on the same day as refuse, with trucks and equipment specifically designed for recyclables. Division (C) makes collection exclusive: no person can purchase or collect recyclable materials in the program area except the city's designated refuse disposal contractor.

Division (D) settles ownership. Once a household places recyclables at the alley in recycling containers, the materials remain the property of the householder until the designated contractor collects them. It is a violation for anyone unauthorized by the city to collect or cause to be collected any items, and each collection from one or more locations is a separate and distinct offense. A charitable or civic organization can apply in writing, and Council can authorize it to collect certain recyclable materials. Two neighboring sections complete the picture.

Section 1060.03 requires every owner or tenant to provide a separate receptacle for each class of waste. Section 1060.05(B) says the basic quarterly charge entitles each family or occupant to weekly collection of all household waste and all recyclable materials, so recycling is not billed as a separate line. Buildings with more than four units fall under § 1060.13 instead.
