Granville County, NC Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Section 38-104 of the Granville County Code sets storage and disposal standards for every owner, occupant, tenant or lessee of property in the unincorporated county. Subsection (b) requires removal of all solid waste from the property at least once each week, on a seven-day cycle. Subsection (c) specifies the container itself: garbage must be stored only in a durable, rust-resistant, nonabsorbent, watertight receptacle with a close-fitting, flytight cover in place and handles or bails strong enough for workers to empty conveniently, with no internal structures obstructing free discharge of contents; the number of containers on a property must be adequate for one week's accumulation, and each container must be kept clean so no odor or nuisance condition results.

Subsection (e) limits how long bulky waste, items like furniture and appliances too large for normal containers, may sit outside a building or dwelling: no more than 72 hours, except for a licensed junk dealer. Subsection (f) separately bars leaving an abandoned icebox, freezer or refrigerator with an airtight door outside where children could access it, unless the door has been removed. Section 38-33(b) requires businesses and similar premises open to the public to place receptacles of sufficient size and number, conspicuously identified for litter disposal.
